Bruno Fernandes publicly disagrees with Cristiano Ronaldo's verdict on Roberto Martinez

Bruno Fernandes has publicly disagreed with Cristiano Ronaldo's claim that Roberto Martinez has brought a 'breath of fresh air' to Portugal.

Martinez, formerly of Belgium, replaced Fernando Santos, who left his role following a disappointing 2022 World Cup campaign.

He began his reign as Portugal boss with a thumping 4-0 win over Liechtenstein, where Ronaldo scored twice.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner spoke glowingly of the impact made by Martinez, stating he had brought a 'breathe of fresh air' to the camp.

The 38-year-old also praised the former Wigan Athletic boss' 'different ideas and mentality' following their victorious Euro 2024 qualifier.

However, Fernandes has played down Martinez's effect and rubbished the idea that there has been a 'breathe of fresh air'.

The Manchester United star said: "No, it's just a new coach with new ideas. There is no breath of fresh air at all. It's just a transition period. The atmosphere in the national team has always been good.

"There's never been anything that wasn't fresh of the air, so I think it's just new dynamics, new coach, and you have to assimilate his ideas."

Fernandes and Ronaldo have differing views of Martinez's influence since he was appointed in January.

The 49-year-old oversaw his second win as Portugal coach following his side's resounding 6-0 victory against Luxembourg as Ronaldo bagged a brace.

And he performed a new celebration after finding the back of the net against the European minnows.

Martinez hailed the importance of the former Real Madrid superstar, highlighting his experience.

"Cristiano is a unique player in the world, with the highest number of international caps," he said.

"The experience he has for the dressing room is very important.

"All players have an important role. The younger ones due to their willingness to play and players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Rui Patricio and Bernardo Silva bring experience.

"It's important to have a complete dressing room."
