Jannik Vestergaard told to 'stay away' from Leicester City and even banned from training

 

Leicester City's Jannik Vestergaard has been told to 'stay away' from his teammates and is training alone, just 18 months after signing for the club.

Every now and again a player pops up for a club and you forgot he ever signed for them, it usually comes during or just after the transfer window.

However, I've only just remembered that Vestergaard ever even signed for Leicester, and he joined them in August 2021, and has played 10 Premier League games since.

Not that you'd want to admit playing in the league's third worst defence, who have conceded 43 goals already this season, including Wout Faes' brilliant two own goals in one game vs Liverpool.

Vestergaard could pretty much be excused of any blame for Brendan Rodgers side being so poor, with the former Southampton centre back having not featured in the league this season.

He has only appeared in three games during the campaign, all in the cup competitions, that they've been knocked out of, which is where his problems start.

Baffled by his lack of football, the former Werder Bremen player told Danish outlet EkstraBladet, "I really felt wanted by Brendan Rodgers.

"While I was at Southampton, he really convinced me that I should switch to Leicester.

"I was already very close to switching from Southampton to Leicester, a year and a half before it became a reality.

"So Brendan Rodgers and the club knew exactly which player they were buying with both my strengths and weaknesses, and it's hard to understand that from one moment to the next I'm suddenly unusable.

"It feels strange, I must admit."

Now, according to the Daily Mail, the centre back, who hasn't played in the league for over a year, has been told to 'stay away' from training with the rest of the squad.

Instead the 30-year-old is training with a fitness coach, having not even been demoted to the under 21s, as happened with Newcastle United star Ryan Fraser recently.

Clearly his own manager wasn't happy with the interview, with Rodgers saying on Thursday, "I'll not talk too much on it as it was an unauthorised interview.

"He said he didn't know why. I had to make sure I wasn't talking to his twin brother, because I've been very clear on his position on the club. That communication has always been there.

"I was surprised. Anything that happened, we'll deal with internally. Any success we've had has been with solidarity and I'll always look to protect that."

There were reportedly offers for the Denmark international in the past two transfer markets, but he has refused the chance to leave for various reasons.

If they continue to create such low xG in games and carry on conceding so many, he'll get the chance to make a comeback for the Foxes in the Championship...
