La Liga have formally submitted an appeal against the registration of Gavi as a first-team player of FC Barcelona, confirms RAC1.
A court ruling allowed Gavi to be registered as a first-team player last month after months of resistance from La Liga. Barca handed him the number 6 jersey afterwards.
However, La Liga claims they were not carried along in the proceedings to register the player.
La Liga president Javier Tebas insists Barcelona do not have the salary leverage to register the teenager as a senior player this season. Tebas told COPE that the decision will be debated in court.
“Due to the measures that have been taken against La Liga, without taking into account what La Liga say, we will oppose and appeal the procedure on Gavi’s registration. Let’s wait for the end of this,” Tebas said.
If La Liga wins the appeal against Barcelona, Gavi's registration as a senior player will be immediately rescinded and the midfielder will return to being a Barca Athletic player. He will also have the no. 6 jersey stripped off him and probably return to wearing the no. 30.
Due to La Liga's refusal to register Gavi, the midfielder has been receiving salary as a Barca Athletic player until late January this year despite signing a bumper senior contract last year.
