Premier League referee Andre Marriner was told to leave pitchside at an under 9s game for 'mouthing off at the ref'

Premier League official Andre Marriner was reportedly told to leave an Under-9s match due to his language.

Reports stated that Marriner was 'mouthing off' towards a referee whilst watching his son play football.

Although it is believed that he denied the claim, he was reportedly ordered away from the touchline as a result of his actions.

Throughout his career as a referee in the Premier League, Marriner built up a reputation for remaining calm in vital moments whilst letting the game flow.

Since becoming an official in the top flight, Marriner has been in charge of 386 Premier League matches. In total, he has handed out 1197 yellow cards and 67 red cards.

Perhaps his most infamous moment was during Chelsea’s 6-0 win over Arsenal in 2014.

During the match, Gunners man Alex Oxlade Chamberlain handled the ball to deny Eden Hazard’s shot from going into the back of the net.

However, Marriner decided to send Kieran Gibbs off instead of Oxlade Chamberlain.

After the match, the PGMOL said: “Andre is an experienced referee and is obviously disappointed that an error of mistaken identity was made in this case.

“Incidents of mistaken identity are very rare and are often the result of a number of different technical factors.

“Whilst this was a difficult decision, Andre is disappointed that he failed to identify the correct player. He expressed his disappointment to Arsenal when he was made aware of the issue.”

Marriner has also compared the level of scrutiny he and his fellow referees are put under to surgeons.

He said: “I can’t think of any other job where there’s this much scrutiny over decision-making.

“Maybe a surgeon?”

On VAR, Marriner said: “It’s about trying to bank up the incidents so there is a standard of when to interfere.

“Because VAR is new to us, we’re learning ourselves.”
