Chelsea's relegation fears laid bare as Frank Lampard dealt defeat upon return

Chelsea are mathematically at risk of slipping into a relegation battle if their current form continues after suffering defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers this afternoon.

After parting ways with Graham Potter after just seven months in the role, Chelsea looked to club legend and former boss Frank Lampard to spark a glimmer of hope amongst the fanbase once again.

However, the club were dealt yet another swift reality check at the Molineux Stadium as Matheus Nunes scored the only goal to secure all three points for the Midlands relegation battlers.

A win which takes Wolves up to 12th place in the Premier League, just one spot behind Chelsea in 11th. Although on 39 points, it is not mathematically impossible for The Blues to be dragged into a relegation battle this season. A fairly embarrassing statement to say given the mass investment conducted by owner Todd Boehly at the club over the last year. As shown by the tweet below.

Everton currently sit in 17th on 27 points, level with Nottingham Forest who occupy the final spot in the bottom three. As stated in the tweet, if Everton do record 12 points in their next eight fixtures and Chelsea lose at least four games against the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal and Brighton who are all on the horizon, it is possible for Chelsea to be dragged into the relegation picture.

However, given the quality amongst their squad with the likes of Enzo Fernandez and Joao Felix, the worst case scenario appears unlikely at this stage.

Nevertheless, it's a disappointing position for the two times Champions League winners to be situated in and one that cannot last much longer given their transfer business.
