How Florentino Perez's Gesture 'Swept' Antonio Rudiger off His Feet 7 Years Ago, Leading Him to Join Real Madrid

Antonio Rudiger has discussed with Canal+ Afrique about his reasons for wanting to join Real Madrid.

During his ACL injury in 2016, Florentino Perez personally wrote a letter to the German defender, expressing his best wishes for a speedy recovery.

"I received the letter in 2016, and still have it in front of me every day. He was wishing me a speedy recovery. I couldn’t believe it. I said I will one day arrive there.

"I still have the letter, my mother has it kept."

Following his recovery from the injury that sidelined him during Euro 2016, Rudiger secured a transfer to Chelsea and made a name for himself as one of the top center-backs in Europe over a span of five years. During this time, he also became a regular fixture in the German national team.

When his contract expired in 2022, Rudiger's transfer to Madrid became a reality.

"I knew I can go to Real Madrid is when I lifted the Champions League with Chelsea. At that moment, I knew.

Antonio Rudiger expressed that he was not expecting the rumors surrounding PSG's interest in him, as he values Real Madrid more highly, despite having no negative feelings towards PSG as it is a great club. He believes that Real Madrid is a superior team.

“If you want to be on the winning side, you join Real Madrid."
