Lewandowski and Benzema Find the Net as Pichichi Award Race Heats Up

AS notes that the Pichichi trophy is presented to the highest scorer in La Liga at the end of each season. The trophy has been awarded for over 60 years and is named after a Basque player, Rafael Moreno Aranzadi, who was also known as Pichichi. The trophy is presented by the Spanish publication, Marca.

The prestigious Pichichi trophy is up for grabs, with Spain's two top scorers now set to fiercely compete for the coveted award.

Marca reports that as the season approaches its conclusion, the competition for the Pichichi Trophy has intensified significantly.

Karim Benzema's resurgence in goalscoring has placed him in closer proximity to Robert Lewandowski, who has been the clear frontrunner for a majority of the season. However, Lewandowski's position at the top now appears to be much less certain.

Robert Lewandowski has scored a total of 19 goals in LaLiga Santander this season, following his recent goal against Real Betis. The Polish striker has found the net in two successive matches against Rayo and Betis, thereby regaining his form and momentum after a lackluster spell in front of the goal.

Meanwhile, Benzema has moved to within two goals of the Barcelona striker with 17 after scoring three goals against Almeria. The Frenchman has recorded two hat-tricks in recent matches, the first being against Real Valladolid, followed by the one against Rubi's team in Matchday 32 at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

The intense competition for the Pichichi trophy is now poised for a direct battle between Lewandowski and the French forward in the closing weeks of the season.

Benzema, who plays for Real Madrid, won the Pichichi trophy last season after scoring 27 goals. However, injuries have hindered his performance this season, preventing him from reaching the same level.
