Lisandro Martinez injury 'better than expected' as dressing room reaction revealed

Lisandro Martinez’s injury sustained in Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Sevilla is “better than expected”, a journalist has reported.

An extraordinary late capitulation saw United’s two-goal advantage over Sevilla in the Europa League quarter-final first leg wiped out, courtesy of two own-goals.

United were coasting after Marcel Sabitzer netted a first-half brace, however, a dramatic ending to the game saw United defender Tyrell Malacia divert the ball past David De Gea to give Sevilla a lifeline.

Then, two minutes into injury time Youssef En-Nesyri's header struck Harry Maguire and deflected into the net.

United's Europa League aspirations now hinge on the club claiming a positive result in the return fixture at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan next Thursday.

The injured Marcus Rashford will likely be absent from the affair, while Martinez and Raphaël Varane may also not feature, having both been forced off through injury against Sevilla.

Martinez injury update

Martinez needed to be carried off the pitch, with what appeared to be a serious injury.

However, Argentinian journalist Gastón Edul provided a positive update on Martinez’s condition.

The TyC Sports writer tweeted: “Lisandro Martínez is not going to do any more tests today.

“Tomorrow (Friday) he will know what he has. The Achilles tendon was ruled out (good news).

“He left on crutches. It could be the fifth metatarsal and the outlook is better than expected.”

And while fear was etched across the faces of many of the United faithful when Lisandro Martinez was carried out of action the player was allegedly “calm” in the dressing room.

After the game, United boss Erik ten Hag said: "I think he will not play on Sunday [away to Nottingham Forest], it looks like that but I can't say what the diagnosis is and I prefer to wait and then we are clear and know exactly what it is.

"I have spoken to him and he's okay, he's calm. We are competing in three competitions so you need a squad. If Licha and [Raphael] Varane are not available on Sunday then others have to do it.

"We have seen Harry Maguire play a good game on Saturday and tonight also he played a really good game."
