Two own-goals undo brilliant first half: player ratings from Man United 2-2 Sevilla

Manchester United looked to be cruising to another comfortable win in the Europa League but a catastrophic final 10 minutes in their first-leg quarter-final tie against Sevilla means that everything is left to play for in the return leg next week.

Erik ten Hag’s men started the game in scintillating fashion and looked like they were going to score with each attack. Marcel Sabitzer scored two goals inside 20 minutes and the Reds continued to dominate the game throughout.

Complacency from United allowed Sevilla to find a route back into the game when Tyrell Malacia let the ball go across him to Jesus Navas, whose cross struck Malacia and past David de Gea.

Just minutes later, United would score another own-goal as Harry Maguire was unfortunate to see the ball deflect off him and into the net.

Man United Player Ratings

David de Gea – 7

Made two brilliant fingertip saves. Could do nothing about either of the goals.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 8

He’s definitely the first-choice right-back at this point.

Raphael Varane – 7

Calm as ever in the first half and was substituted with an injury. Hopefully, it’s not too bad.

Lisandro Martinez – 8

Continues to be United’s most consistent player but Ten Hag will be worried after highly distressing scenes at the end. Completely unchallenged, Martinez went down clutching his achilles and had to be carried off the pitch.

Tyrell Malacia – 6

Did well for most of the game but a defining 90 seconds saw him spurn a golden chance to make it 3-0 before his mistake opened the game up.

Casemiro – 8

Feels good to watch him play for United again.

Bruno Fernandes – 8

The conductor in the middle. His new deeper role suits him well. He will miss the return leg after a questionable yellow card in the first half.

Antony – 9

Arguably his best performance since he joined the club. Barely put a foot wrong and deserved to score a goal. Struck the post with a stunning curler in the second half.

Marcel Sabitzer – 10

He’s been playing in an advanced role recently and it has suited him far more than his previous position. Two goals to boot.

Jadon Sancho – 6

Tough evening for him – wasn’t on the same wavelength as the other attackers.

Anthony Martial – 8

One of the positives from the night. His long wait for a return came to an end and he definitely delivered.
