"VVD is far better" - Jamie Carragher gives seven reasons why Virgil van Dijk is better than Nemanja Vidic

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher wasn't backing down as he caused a stir on Twitter following his claims that Virgil van Dijk is a better defender than former Manchester United star Nemanja Vidic.

The Dutchman has suffered a disappointing campaign for Jurgen Klopp's side and the 31-year-old hasn't been far from criticism on social media and from former players. However, since he arrived at Anfield he has been a dominant figure at the heart of the recent success in L4 which claimed domestic and European glory.

As a result of his performances during that period, he has been uttered in the same conversation as some of the great Premier League defenders. Much of the debate that roars online surrounds Van Dijk and former Red Devils duo Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

The morning after Liverpool drew with table-topping Arsenal in an enthralling encounter at Anfield, Carragher was quick to defend the Reds centre-back.

In an original post from Football Tweet on Twitter, they claim that Van Dijk's 'drop off' is "actually insane".

 But 45-year-old Carragher was having none of it. He replied: "VVD [Virgil van Dijk] is far better than Vidic, who was a top CB, but have you forgot his performances against Torres?

"Rio & JT had poor seasons in their career like all players, VVD is having one now. No CB in the PL era has ever had VVD’s impact on a team."

"Never mind the best CB in the league, he’s been the best player in the league along with KDB for four years before this one," he added in another tweet.

"We have never spoken about about other CB’s being the best player before, that shows the level he was at."

As expected, United fans flocked to the Champions League winners' account to argue their thoughts on centre-back pairing. But Carragher wasn't backing down, he responded to one tweet: "If you or anyone thinks Vidic is better than VVD you’re not watching the same game! He’s miles better!!"

Pressed on what makes Van DIjk better than Vidic, Carragher gave seven reasons - not all of them serious - in a further post: "Passing, pace, in the air, 1v1 defending, the roads, sanitation, the aqueduct……"
