Harry Maguire to stay at Manchester United and fight for his place
Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has said he is happy to stay at the club and fight for his place in the team.
Maguire's future at Old Trafford has been the subject of speculation in recent months, after he was stripped of the captaincy and endured a difficult season last term.
However, the 30-year-old has insisted that he is determined to prove his worth to new manager Erik ten Hag.
"I'm happy to be here," Maguire told Sky Sports. "I'm going to fight for my place and I'm looking forward to the season ahead."
Maguire will face stiff competition for a starting spot in the United defence, with Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof all vying for places.
However, the England international is confident that he can force his way back into the team.
"I'm confident in my ability," Maguire said. "I've played at the highest level for many years and I know what I'm capable of.
"I'm just excited to get started under Erik and I'm looking forward to the challenge."
Maguire's decision to stay at United is a boost for Ten Hag, who is looking to build a strong squad for the upcoming season.
The Dutchman is known for his demanding style of play and Maguire will need to be at his best if he wants to be a regular starter under Ten Hag.
However, Maguire is a proven performer at the highest level and he will be hoping to rediscover his best form in the coming months.
With Euro 2024 just around the corner, Maguire will also be keen to impress Gareth Southgate and earn a place in England's squad for the tournament.
A strong season at United would go a long way towards achieving that goal.
