Trent Alexander-Arnold is England's BEST midfielder, claims former Reds star
Dean Saunders has urged Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to sign a right-back and move Trent Alexander-Arnold into midfield.
Saunders believes that Alexander-Arnold is better than other English midfielders such as Declan Rice and stressed that Klopp should be playing him in that position.
Alexander-Arnold is one of Klopp's most important players but he is mainly deployed at right-back for Liverpool, although he was used in a more inverted role towards the end of last season.
The 24-year-old was given an opportunity in midfield as England faced Malta and North Macedonia last month and he was hugely impressive as he played some excellent passes.
Speaking on talkSPORT, former Liverpool player Saunders said: 'I think Trent is the best English midfield player in England - I think he's better than all of them.
'If you play him in midfield he can do everything that Declan Rice does, everything, but also he can hit passes that Thiago hits.
'If I was Jurgen Klopp I'd buy a right-back and play Trent in midfield.'
Saunders expressed his belief that Klopp will eventually start using Alexander-Arnold in midfield.
He said: 'Trent was brought up as a midfield player, he ended up at full-back. He knows what to do. You've got to have wing mirrors on when you play in the middle of midfield because you're playing with your back to goal and facing the other way. I think he can do both.'
'I think Klopp eventually will play Trent in the middle of midfield.'
Alexander-Arnold possesses a fantastic passing range and it would be intriguing to see how he would fare against high quality opponents if used in midfield.
However, as Saunders alludes to, if Alexander-Arnold was moved into midfield then it would significantly weaken Liverpool at right-back as they don't have many other options in that position.
Rice, meanwhile, is set to join Arsenal from West Ham in a £105million move.
After experimenting with Alexander-Arnold in midfield it will be interesting to see whether Gareth Southgate will persist with that tactic for the long term.
