Wayne Rooney Tells Mason Greenwood to Leave Man United After Latest Snub

Wayne Rooney has urged Mason Greenwood to leave Manchester United in order to get out of a 'difficult position' at Old Trafford ahead of the upcoming season.

The 21-year-old has not played for the Red Devils since being suspended by the club last January, with an internal investigation still ongoing after the charges against him were dropped earlier this year.

Greenwood remains unavailable for selection at United and is yet to return to first-team training at Carrington, although he has recently been pictured taking part in sessions with a private coach in his own time. The situation leaves Greenwood's future at the club in limbo and Rooney believes that a fresh start elsewhere would be the best course of action for all parties involved.

"It leaves Mason Greenwood in a position where he is stuck," Rooney told The Athletic. "So for Mason, it’s a bad position to be in because I’m sure he just wants to play football, but for the club, its image and ensuring they make the right decisions, it’s almost a catch 22.

"I think the best thing for Mason now is to get out of the club and go and develop somewhere else. He needs to get back playing because it has been a long time. With everything that has happened and how long the internal investigation has taken, it’s probably got to a place now where Mason just needs to go and play and to try and get his career back on track.

"It’s a difficult position for Mason but for the club as well. You have to make sure you get to the right decision before moving forward and it looks like they’re really struggling to get to that place."

United chiefs are still believed to be mulling over the possibility of bringing Greenwood back into the fold, with the process yet to be finalized behind the scenes at Old Trafford. The Manchester Evening News reports that a binding decision will soon be taken by the Glazer family and United executive Richard Arnold, which suggests that Greenwood's situation is not linked to the ongoing takeover process.

Erik ten Hag, meanwhile, has remained tight-lipped when quizzed on the possibility of giving the forward another chance at United. The Dutchman recently told The Times that he does not have the authority to influence the decision-making process, but admitted that Greenwood has 'showed in the past that he is capable of doing that [scoring goals for United]'.

Greenwood joined United at the age of six and has registered 129 senior appearances for the Red Devils since making his professional debut for the club four years ago. He has also won a single cap for England, but has not played for the Three Lions since breaking Covid-19 restrictions while on international duty in Iceland in 2020.
