Declan Rice gives hilarious response over losing his British transfer record to Moises Caicedo

Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice became the most expensive player in British history earlier this summer - for a matter of weeks.

The 24-year-old joined the Gunners from West Ham for a fee of £105 million, concluding a protracted transfer saga that had briefly seen Manchester City join the race.

Arsenal had been seriously targeting Rice since January, with manager Mikel Arteta identifying him as his top target for the summer window.

And the former Hammers captain has already proven himself as a valuable asset to the Gunners with a star performance in their 1-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Rice produced an all-action display at Selhurst Park as Arsenal, who were reduced to 10 players following Takehiro Tomiyasu's sending off for two yellow cards, held on for an important victory.

But one tag the midfielder no longer holds is that of being English football's most expensive player.

Last week, Chelsea completed a £115 million deal to sign Moises Caicedo from Brighton - another example of how Premier League clubs can demand huge fees for their star players.

And when asked about losing out on the record to his fellow midfielder by Sky Sports, Rice had a brilliant response.

Speaking on Monday Night Football after the win over Palace, Rice was quizzed about whether he could believe that he had been the record holder for only weeks.

He replied: "I had it up on the wall for two weeks, it's come down already!"

On his time at Arsenal so far, he added: "Do you know what, before the game tonight, I was on the way to the game, and I just thought: 'Let's go out there and try and put on a show'.

"I wanted to go out there and perform. I was just really up for it. Only two games in, obviously there's so much talk about the price tag and me playing for Arsenal.

"I want to keep proving people wrong, that I can play at the top, and I want to keep on putting in top performers."
