Liverpool Seal £60 Million Deal to Acquire Romeo Lavia from Southampton
Liverpool Football Club has successfully reached an agreement to secure the services of Southampton's talented midfielder, Romeo Lavia. This development was reported on Monday morning.
During this summer transfer window, the Reds have been actively seeking to bolster their squad by acquiring a proficient sitting midfielder. This pursuit gained momentum after key players such as Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, and James Milner were transferred.
Lavia emerged as their prime target for this role. Yet, their focus briefly shifted to Moises Caicedo. At one point, it seemed a deal with Caicedo was imminent, as Brighton accepted an offer of £110 million and a medical examination was scheduled.
However, Chelsea, who were also vying for Lavia's signature, outbid Liverpool with a substantial £115 million proposal. This offer appears to have secured the services of the Ecuadorian midfielder.
According to reputable sources such as The Guardian, Liverpool has successfully negotiated a transfer fee of £60 million with Southampton for Lavia. However, the final decision now rests on convincing Lavia to choose Liverpool over Chelsea.
Liverpool faced rejection for their initial bids for Lavia, who was formerly associated with Manchester City. Southampton was determined to secure the highest possible fee. In a surprising turn of events, Chelsea entered the competition, expressing interest in both Lavia and Caicedo to enhance their midfield under the management of Mauricio Pochettino.
Chelsea submitted a bid of £55 million for the Belgian midfielder on a Friday. Nevertheless, Liverpool surpassed this offer with their superior package.
According to insights from Ben Jacobs of CBS Sports, Lavia has consistently expressed his openness to joining Liverpool. Ultimately, the decision may hinge on Lavia's preference, should Chelsea decide to match the latest bid.
Lavia ventured into English football in 2020, signing with Manchester City from Anderlecht. While he made two appearances for City's first team during the 2021/22 campaign, he subsequently moved to Southampton in a £14 million deal during the previous summer.
Throughout the last Premier League season, Lavia featured prominently, making 29 appearances as Southampton faced relegation. With aspirations to depart from the club, he seeks new horizons.
Notably, due to a stipulated sell-on clause in his contract, Manchester City is entitled to 20% of the fee received by Southampton.
Additionally, Chelsea introduced a £40 million buy-back clause, enforceable only in 2024. This clause, however, will become irrelevant if Lavia chooses to pursue a different opportunity.
