Fernandes: Onana has qualities to be a success at Man United
Onana was Man United's second major signing
Bruno Fernandes believes Andre Onana's strong personality will be crucial to his success at Man United as he looks to succeed the long-serving David de Gea.
"Obviously, if someone has picked Andre to come in and be the goalkeeper of Manchester United then he has to be a big personality," Fernandes told club media.
"The past of this club hasn’t had many goalkeepers because David was here 12 years, before that Edwin [van der Sar].
"If he's now here and playing that position, it's because he brings something to the team. He has qualities coming out from the back but he’s also good at stopping shots so that's what we can expect from him."
Onana arrived as United's second major signing of the summer in July after a £47.2million deal was agreed with Inter Milan.
The 27-year-old flew straight out to pre-season training in the United States and has been a consistent presence between the posts since.
Erik ten Hag's insistence on signing Onana was due in part to the former Ajax man's quality on possession while the first few weeks at Old Trafford have seen his shot-stopping tested.
