Osasuna fans facing punishment from La Liga after telling Mason Greenwood to "die" in Getafe debut

Osasuna fans are set to be punished for their brutal chants aimed at Mason Greenwood in his Getafe debut.

The 21-year-old came off the bench to make his first appearance for his new club, who have loaned him from Manchester United for the season.

It was Greenwood's first game since his arrest in January 2022 and he helped his side to a 3-2 win that moves them up to ninth in the table.

Although the decision to sign him remains controversial and led to criticism from a domestic abuse charity in Spain, Greenwood has been received extremely positively and was loudly cheered by his new supporters when he entered the fray in the 77th minute.

However, fans of opponents Osasuna Getafe fans were chanting "Greenwood, die" in the away section of the ground when Greenwood came on at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez.

According to The Athletic, La Liga’s official match observer heard the chants and a disciplinary process will begin once he feeds back.

The outlet asked Osasuna's manager, Jagoba Arrasate, about the chants and while he condemned them, he also pointed out songs from the home fans.

"The chants of ‘F**k Osasuna’ were very bad and the chants against Greenwood were very bad too,” he commented post-match.

“He is a player who, in the end, the justice system had its say.

“He is a very good player. But if we talk about chants, we should talk about all the chants, not just some.”

Greenwood has resumed his playing career away from Manchester United after criminal charges of attempted rape, assault, and coercive control against him were dropped Crown Prosecution Service in February.

Current United star Amad Diallo showed support for his comeback, posting a picture of him watching the game on his Instagram story.

Getafe's next fixture is against Real Sociedad on Sunday 24 September.
