Southampton FC, affectionately known as the Saints, narrowly avoided relegation in the 2021/22 season. However, with a new player in and out for 2023, the team is looking stronger and more competitive.

At the helm is Ralph Hasenhuttl, who took over from Mark Hughes as manager. Hasenhuttl’s leadership and strategic acumen will be crucial in guiding the team towards a mid-table finish in the Premier League by the end of the 2023/24 season.

Stay tuned as we delve into the details of the squad, their strengths, and what we can expect from them this season. Let’s cheer on the Saints as they embark on this exciting journey in the Premier League!

Southampton new players and signings – arrivals 2023/24

Southampton New Signings Age Signed From Club Transfer Fee
Shea Charles 19 Man City U21 €12.25m
Ross Stewart 27 Sunderland €9.30m
Ryan Manning 27 Swansea free transfer
Joe Lumley 28 Middlesbrough free transfer
Flynn Downes 24 West Ham loan transfer
Ryan Fraser 29 Newcastle loan transfer
Mason Holgate 26 Everton loan transfer
Taylor Harwood-Bellis 21 Man City loan transfer

The Southampton FC Squad lineup 2023/24 season consists of these players.

Southampton FC Squad: Goalkeepers

  • Gavin Bazunu
  • Alex McCarthy
  • Joe Lumley
In the goalkeeping department, Southampton are quite content. Gavin Bazunu has cemented his spot in the starting XI over Alex McCarthy. He joined the Saints from Man City U21. Fraser Forster has been moved out to Spurs this season. Forster was their leading custodian at the start of the last campaign but after a series of inconsistent displays, Hassenhutl has chosen to go with new signing Buzunu. Forster put in some great performances initially and at one point was even contending for a spot in the England national team. Alex McCarthy was also Southampton’s main choice but he could be a backup option.

Southampton FC Squad: Defenders

  • Taylor Harwood-Bellis
  • Jan Bednarek
  • Mason Holgate
  • Jack Stephens
  • Ryan Manning
  • Kyle Walker-Peters
  • Juan Larios
  • James Bree
The defence has been quite poor for the Saints and have caused the majority of their problems recently. The likes of Yan Valery and Jan Bednarek have done well but the others have not been able to step up to their duties and have let their sides down on a number of occasions. They strengthened their defence with Armel Bella-Kotchap from VfL Bochum as centre-back. They also signed Duje Caleta-Car and Juan Larios. Romain Perraud, Lyanco and Tino Livramento were Soutmapton’s signings last season. Now, the defence looks quite balanced.

Southampton FC Squad: Midfielders

  • Shea Charles
  • Flynn Downes
  • Joe Aribo
  • Stuart Armstrong
  • Carlos Alcaraz
  • Will Smallbone

Joe Aribo is the latest signings of Southampton FC in midfield. Will Smallbone moved out to Stoke

City on loan transfer but has returned. James Ward-Prowse has always been hailed for his crosses. The Englishman’s ability going forward as well as his willingness to help his side defensively hasn’t gone unnoticed but they will have to do without him now on. The Southampton midfield ranks are adequate as the addition of Joe Aribo from Rangers will give their buildup more vile, especially in crunch time.

Southampton FC Squad: Forwards

  • Kamaldeen Sulemana
  • Samuel Edozie
  • Ryan Fraser
  • Samuel Amo-Ameyaw
  • Ché Adams
  • Paul Onuachu
  • Adam Armstrong
  • Sékou Mara
  • Ross Stewart

Sékou Mara was signed by the club from G. Bordeaux in the summer of 2023. Shane Long has left the club and moved to Rangers. Their prominent player Danny Ings moved to Aston Villa last season. Nathan Redmond left to Besiktas.

Kamaldeen Sulemana, Paul Onuachu and Mislav Orsic are the latest addition to the forward list. A lot of fans put down the lack of goals to the old manager’s style of play. Southampton had poor intent in goal scoring last season and the German boss didn’t invest in big players this summer. Hassenhutl likes to implement an attacking style of football which places a lot of responsibilities on his strikers.
