Solksjaer expresses Man United concern despite spanking Aston Villa 3-0

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has expressed concern about Manchester United despite seeing his side beat Aston Villa 3-0 to remain on course for a place in the Champions League next season, saying they need to be even more clinical.

United are just a point off Leicester in fourth place after a record fourth successive Premier League win by a margin of three goals or more.

They swotted struggling Villa aside after a controversial penalty from Bruno Fernandes before teen sensation Mason Greenwood and Paul Pogba notched from the edge of the box.

It continues their red-hot form after beating Sheffield United 3-0, Brighton 3-0 and Bournemouth 5-2.

Solskjaer, whose side have now scored 100 goals in all competitions this term, said: “I think we could have scored four or five more.

“We are happy with the way we create chances but we need to be more clinical.

“We could have scored so many more goals.”

With United targeting a Champions League place next season, the manager added: “Hopefully the goal difference won’t be the deciding factor because we should have had 10 more goals the last two games.”

Solskjaer reckons his side’s red-hot form shows they are capable of lifting the title again in the future after not triumphing since 2013.

“I am sure Manchester United will mount a challenge and get back to winning the league,” he insisted.

“How quickly, is up to everyone here.

“We are definitely improving and developing as a team. Everything is miles better in the dressing room.”

Villa made a bright start but collapsed after a controversial penalty which Fernandes won and despatched in the 27th minute.

The Portuguese ace went down on the top of the box after standing and turning on the ball before crashing into Ezri Konsa, who Villa felt was fouled instead.

Greenwood then doubled the visitors lead before the break after a superb counter-attack and finish.

After the break Pogba curled in his first of the season from distance.

Pogba said: “We are really pleased with ourselves but we have to carry on and keep the level up.

“The performances are very good and the standard of Manchester United but we didn’t win anything this year so there is a lot to do.”

Villa, who slip a place to 19th, are now four points from safety with four games left.

Boss Dean Smith said: “I thought we made a really bright start but it all changed around on the penalty decision.

“I don’t know what VAR are looking at it. It is a disgraceful decision.”
