Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos achieve unique La Liga record after scoring Betis winner

The Madrid captain opened his account for the season with a fantastic penalty.

Sergio Ramos’ goal against Real Betis means has now scored in 17 consecutive La Liga seasons, becoming the third player to achieve that record in the league’s history.

He’s the second Real Madrid player to manage the achievement after legendary striker Santillana did so in the 1980s.

But Ramos still has some way to go as Athletic Bilbao legend Agustin Gainza holds the record, having managed to score for 19 successive campaigns.

What makes Ramos a special inductee into this elusive club is that he’s a defender and it’s extremely rare for defenders to score goals every season – moreover for 17 campaigns!
