Ryan Tolmich of Goal reminds how the Dutch coach wanted to see the promising defender wearing the Oranje jersey exactly one year ago.
Barcelona are heavily interested in Ajax's versatile defender Sergino Dest and the deal could be getting closer, according to several trustworthy sources.
Ryan Tolmich of Goal reveals it isn't the first time Ronald Koeman tries to get his precious target.
Here is a brief from us to explain what has happened between these two:
In 2019, Ronald Koeman started a campaign to get Sergino Dest for the Netherlands national team.
Back then, the defender was eligible for several countries because of his roots: his father is a Surinamese American while his mother is Dutch.
Koeman contacted the promising youngster and tried to persuade him into accepting the Oranje.
That's what the coach told Goal back in August 2019: "I don't promise anyone, but I told him that I see a future for him with the Dutch national team."
However, Dest opted for the USMNT and made his debut appearance against Canada in the Concacaf Nations League on November 16.
It took the right-back just 2 minutes to provide an assist as the USA won 4-1.
Dest felt more comfortably with the USMNT as they had been committed to his future for many years.
The starlet even confessed he personally informed Koeman of his decision because of the great respect for the Dutch manager.
