Pique calls for changes at Barcelona: 'We touched the sky with the treble of 2015 and hit rock-bottom with the 8-2 defeat'

The Catalans are yet to win the Champions League since 2015.

Barca's latest CL campaign ended in a painful 8-2 defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich in August's quarter-final.

Some positive changes have been made since then but there are many to be done in years to come, according to Pique.

“We touched the sky with the treble of 2015. From there, the club has been falling instead of growing and that trend is not pleasant,” Gerard Pique said in an interview with La Vanguardia.

“We hit rock-bottom with the 8-2 defeat. We all had to do a ‘reset’ to see what was best for the club. We must understand that nobody is bigger than the club.”

Barcelona won their last Champions League trophy in 2015. The Catalans' latest run in the competition ended in a painful 8-2 defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich in August's quarter-final.

The Blaugrana replaced Quique Setien with Ronald Koeman in the dugout and have sold such ageing players as Ivan Rakitic, Arturo Vidal and Luis Suarez since then.

“Clearly, there were many areas in the team which were in dire need of a change,” Pique added.

“It is true that some of them have been made – and that perhaps not all of them have to be carried out at once – but it must be clear that things need to be done differently.”
