Shaka Hislop: Lampard needs to fix Chelsea's 'awful' defence

Shaka Hislop: Lampard needs to fix Chelsea's 'awful' defence

Former Premier League goalkeeper Shaka Hislop has called out to Frank Lampard to work on Chelsea's shamble defence pointing out several occasions where the defenders faulted.

Chelsea was poor defensively Hislop said as they conceded three avoidable goals in the match against Southampton.

"You can start with Christensen leaving Ings to run off him and stand in an acre of space for their first, the Kurt Zouma mistake followed up by Kepa being indecisive for Southampton’s second. It was bordering on comical, in all honesty.

"Then, later on when you’re 3-2 up and you concede free-kicks in dangerous areas needlessly. As much as you want to point the finger at inexperience or a need for reinforcements at the back, Thiago Silva’s injury, this is just basic professionalism.

"You don’t have to be a good defender to avoid the mistakes Chelsea are making and continue to cost them. Frank Lampard has to sort this out. He has to give these defenders authority to make decisions in the spur of the moment."

Chelsea drew 3-3 against Southampton. The Blues have conceded 9 goals in 5 Premier League games so far, only keeping one clean sheet - in a 4-0 win over Crystal Palace.
