Highlight Atl. Madrid 3 - 0 Betis: Atléti weather the Halloween storm

Atlético Madrid showed why they are the defending La Liga champions on a wet and windy day at the Wanda Metropolitano, beating Real Betis 3-0, extending their winning streak against 'Los Verdes’ at home to nine games.

Despite the match being played in the midst of torrential rain, both teams began proceedings on the front foot, creating a flurry of chances in the opening 15 minutes, and it would be a moment of magic from ‘Los Colchoneros’ that would open the scoring.

Just before the 30th minute mark, Atléti broke from their own half with rip-roaring pace, with the ball eventually finding Yannick Carrasco who breezed past a Betis defender and lashed the ball into the roof of the net to give the hosts the lead. In typical fashion, Simeone’s men set up shop after scoring, and took their one goal lead into the dressing room at HT.

While they pushed hard to level the score in the second half, disaster struck for ‘Los Verdiblancos’ 63 minutes into the match when Germán Pezzella headed the ball into his own net form an Atlético corner kick, quelling any sort of momentum that the visitors had going for them.

The game was fully put to bed 10 minutes from FT when João Félix was played in behind the Betis defence and fired a shot into the bottom right corner of Claudio Bravo’s net in emphatic style. While the goal was initially ruled out for offside, VAR overturned the call to allow the goal and extend Atléti’s lead to three in the dying moments of the match.

Betis came into the match in fine form, with 21 points from their first 11 La Liga games - their second best tally in club history. Yet, Diego Simeone’s men flexed their muscles, and showed why they have only lost one of their last 18 La Liga showdowns against Betis.
