Bayern 2 - 1 Freiburg: Bayern deliver Freiburg’s first defeat of the season

Freiburg fought hard, but Bayern Munich bagged goals either side of halftime to secure the three points at the Allianz Arena - while inflicting the first defeat of the season across all competitions to ‘Breisgau-Brasilianer’.

Freiburg enjoyed an impressive start to the game and genuinely looked like the better side during the first 15 minutes, pressing high up the pitch and not allowing Bayern to operate freely nor giving them the chance to move the ball around.

However, the visitors could not create many scoring chances and paid a steep price for that as ‘Die Roten’ took advantage of the first clear opportunity they had and Leon Goretzka broke the deadlock in the 30th minute with a composed finish following an assist from Thomas Müller.

Bayern took full control of the game after scoring the opener and looked quite threatening, particularly through Alphonso Davies on the left flank, but they couldn’t add another goal before the HT break.

In a way, Freiburg can be considered fortunate to be down just one goal at the break given how dominant Bayern looked in the final 20 minutes of the opening half.

The visitors attempted to turn things around in the second half and played higher up the pitch, but as one could have expected, they couldn’t maintain that intensity as the game progressed and Bayern looked more and more comfortable as minutes advanced.

While Bayern could not translate that superiority into goals, they could have easily added a few more strikes. Goretzka was particularly dangerous, and the Germany international hit the post twice.

Bayern eventually did break Freiburg’s resistance midway through the second half when Robert Lewandowski tapped the ball home from close range into the empty net, marking Bayern’s 100th Bundesliga goal in the calendar year.

Freiburg pulled a goal back in the 92nd minute, but it proved to be nothing but a consolation goal for Janik Haberer, as Bayern saw out the win. Bayern bagged their ninth victory of the campaign and remain at the top of the standings, while Freiburg suffered their first defeat of the season across all competitions.
