Chelsea 1 - 1 Burnley: Vydra punishes wasteful Blues

In a hotly contested affair at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea were made to pay for their lack of ruthlessness in front of goal, drawing 1-1 with relegation candidates Burnley. Despite already having scored 16 goals at home this season, Thomas Tuchel’s men were unable to capitalize on a thoroughly one sided contest and build on their fantastic start to the season.

The league leaders flexed their muscles early on by dominating the run of play, creating a flurry of half chances in front of Nick Pope’s net in the first 20 minutes, but the ‘Blues’ were unable to find the final bit of quality needed to trouble the Burnley goalkeeper.

The Burnley defence, which had been bending, finally broke 12 minutes from HT when Reece James played a super ball into the box where Kai Havertz was waiting unmarked to nod the ball home, giving Chelsea a 1-0 lead to take into the HT to show for their dominance in the first 45 minutes.

The home side continued to pile the pressure on the ‘Clarets’ in the second half, but were met with stubbornness from the typically solid Burnley rearguard. And despite some high quality chances falling to the likes of Havertz and Ross Barkley, Chelsea found it difficult to extend their lead and put the match to bed - leaving Burnley in the match.

The hosts would be punished for not finding a second goal just over ten minutes before FT when Ashley Westwood drifted a ball into the Chelsea box where Jay Rodriguez was waiting to unselfishly head the ball across the box to his strike partner Matěj Vydra. The Czech forward collected the ball and stabbed home, levelling the scoreline, and shocking the home crowd.

The gutsy draw from Burnley sees them snap a four game losing streak against the West Londoners, but further extends their poor run in H2Hs with Chelsea, as Sean Dyche’s men have only beaten the ‘Blues’ one time in their last 15 Premier League matches.
