Ex- Man Utd midfielder Paul Scholes label Aaron Wan-Bissaka "useless on the ball"

The Old Trafford legend claims Wan-Bissaka, 23, is a victim of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's tactical changes as he does not have the ability to play as a wing-back.

Scholes was speaking after United were pummelled for 90 minutes in a 2-0 defeat by Manchester City in Saturday's derby,

Wan-Bissaka was one of the many players wearing red who underperformed and he endured a torrid afternoon against the likes of Joao Cancelo and Phil Foden down City's left flank.

Scholes believes the Englishman is out of his depth playing in a role which requires him to progress the ball in the midfield third and deliver from wide areas.

"I said before the 3-5-2 doesn’t suit the players in the team," the former midfielder told Premier League Productions . "Wan-Bissaka is useless on the ball - brilliant defender but useless on the ball at right-back.

"Three centre-halves today, none of them that good on the ball. Ole has got to find a way... There’s a squad of players there that could be okay."

Wan-Bissaka is yet to produce a goal or an assist this season, whereas the likes of Reece James and Trent Alexander-Arnold - considered the Premier League's best right-backs - have tallies of eight and six respectively.

Meanwhile, Scholes is hugely concerned by United's lack of direction under Solskjaer in his third full season in charge.

"The conviction has to come from the coach of the way you’re going to play football," said the 46-year-old. "Ole has been here three years now and we’ve come here today not really knowing what he’s going to do.

"That makes the recruitment almost impossible because you’re not buying players for a system.

Scholes added: "Three years down the line you can see the evidence on the pitch, today and two weeks ago we are a long way off.
