Southampton announce takeover, new owners want to run multi-club model

Southampton have become the latest Premier League club to have changed the ownership.

It's been confirmed that Chinese businessman Gao Jisheng sold his controlling stake at the club to London-based investment firm Sport Republic.

Unlike the previous owner who wanted the club to be self-sustainable, Sport Republic are expected to invest in the club.

More importantly, however, Southampton are set to become the cornerstone of their multi-club model, with more clubs to be acquired in the coming years.

"Our ambition is to build a portfolio of high-influence stakes in football clubs and other sporting assets across the world," Sport Republic chairman Henrik Kraft said.

Southampton have stayed in the Premier League for 10 consecutive seasons but have not been able to finish in the top 10 since 2016/17 - so they are hoping that the new investments will give them fresh energy.
