Kenya kicked out of the 2023 AFCON due to government intervention

Kenya will be missing her second consecutive Africa cup of nations after their last in 2019, the confederation of African football disqualified the team for failing to respect FIFA laws on government intervention.

On November 11, 2021, Kenya’s Sports Cabinet Secretary, Amina Mohamed, disbanded the Nick Mwendwa-led Football Kenya Federation and installed a Caretaker Committee to run football activities in accordance with the federation’s constitution.

Failure to reinstate the federation two weeks before the Qualifiers as requested by CA and FIFA will cost them an additional 2 years' wait.

“In case the suspension is not lifted two weeks before the matchday of the qualifiers, Both associations will be considered as losers and eliminated from the competition,” reads a part of the CAF statement in April

Kenya was lodged in group C alongside Cameroon, Namibia and Burundi, The Harambee stars were set to kickstart their campaign on June 4 against Cameroon but that won’t be possible now. Group C has 3 participants with the first and runner upset to qualify for Côte-d’Ivoire 2023.

“Consequently their groups will be comprised of three teams. The first and the runners up of groups of these teams will qualify for the final tournament,” added the communique

Cameroon has increased chances of qualifying with Kenya out of the way, as the indomitable lions have the least experience with Burundi and Namibia teams to contend with.
