VAR Controversy Hits The Championship Playoff Final

The Championship play-off final has had its first taste of VAR controversy as Huddersfield have had two penalty appeals waved away after review.

Since its introduction VAR has split opinions around the footballing world, often causing as much confusion as it does clarity, and it was called into action in the 73rd-minute.

Huddersfield’s Harry Toffolo seemed to go down in the penalty area having been clipped by Jack Colback, but referee Jonathan Moss saw it differently giving a yellow card for simulation.

VAR took a look and although there seemed to be clear contact between Colback’s foot and Toffolo’s leg, the onfield decision was made to stand.

Not ten minutes later and controversy struck once more as Huddersfield had a second penalty appeal which wasn’t given either.

Was either of these a penalty? Should VAR have intervened? Welcome to the big boy leagues.
