'It's a backwards step': Frenkie de Jong's Man United move baffles Darren Bent

Speaking on talkSPORT radio, Darren Bent said: "It's a surprising one when you look at where Barcelona are, and Manchester United are having a complete rebuild.

"It is surprising, I don't understand why Barcelona are getting rid of someone of that quality. Do they need the money? He made it clear he wants to stay, he called Barcelona the biggest club in the world.

"He seems happy there. For Frenkie de Jong, next season he's dropping out of the Champions League into the Europa League. It does seem like a backwards step."

Man United are edging closer to bringing De Jong to Old Trafford this summer with the Red Devils on the verge of agreeing a transfer fee with Barcelona.

The Dutchman has spoken about his desire to stay in Spain but the La Liga giants could have no choice but to sell the player due to their financial issues.
