A report by the French Senate has found that Liverpool supporters were unfairly blamed for the chaotic scenes at Stade de France in an attempt to divert attention from the real failure of the state and organisers.
After many weeks of testimony and questioning of senior ministers and the Paris police chief, the Senate concluded that a "chain of events and malfunctions,” by the authorities was the root cause of the problems.
It was also found that the main problem with crowd management was that the police were using a form blocking tactic designed for anti-terrorism operations. This led to overcrowding at the pre-screening security checkpoints.
The report found that the French police intelligence was "founded on a dated vision of British supporters, harking back to the hooligans of the 1980s.”
The report also claimed that Gerald Darmanin had attempted to blame the Livepool supporters to “divert attention from the inability of the state to adequately manage the crowds present.”
The report also found that there was a "presence of delinquents in large numbers,” in and around the area in the days leading up to the final. Some 300 to 400 petty criminals pickpocketed and mugged supporters before and after the game.
Senator Laurent Lafon told the press: “Clearly we express our regret and apologies for what happened.”
He also went on to say that the Liverpool supporters were "really the victims of what happened.” He also urged to French president Emmanuel Macron to address the Liverpool supporters about the incident.
