Mohamed Salah and Riyad Mahrez scored in the space of sixty seconds, as Manchester City edged out Liverpool in the EFL Cup.
City's Algerian forward Mahrez gave the English champions the lead two minutes after the break, with a fine strike.
However, his celebrations did not last as Salah fired back immediately after connecting to a pass from Darwin Nunez.
Both players have been part of their teams for mid-season training, as Algeria and Egypt failed to make it to the World Cup.
In a thrilling encounter at the Etihad Stadium, it was Erling Halaand who broke the deadlock just ten minutes into the match.
Fabio Carvalho responded for Liverpool ten minutes later, as both sides went into the break with a goal apiece.
After the break, Mahrez and Salah both produced some moments of magic but Nathan Ake, who rejoined City after the World Cup with the Netherlands, scored the winner in the 58th minute.
Title holders Liverpool are now out of the competition.
The English Premier League returns on Boxing Day with Manchester City facing Leeds United, while Liverpool take on Aston Villa.
