Cody Gakpo's Liverpool Debut Set To Be Delayed Due To Bank Holiday And Paperwork

Cody Gakpo will have to wait for his Liverpool debut as Jurgen Klopp explained why he knew instantly the player wanted a move to Anfield.

Gakpo will officially become a Reds player when the transfer window opens at the start of next month after moving from PSV Eindhoven for an initial £37million fee.

Injuries to attacking duo Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota helped persuade Liverpool to move mid-way through the season for the player, with Fabio Carvalho and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain having both started on the left wing since the season restarted last week and in contention to feature against Leicester City on Friday evening.

And although Liverpool are then in action on January 2 at Brentford, Klopp doesn’t expect Gakpo to be available until the FA Cup third round visit of Wolverhampton Wanderers the following Saturday evening.

“We are obviously very early (making the move), which is good,” said the Reds boss. “There might be a chance for Brentford but not really. January 1 is a Bank Holiday but the papers some other people have to sign would have to be done at 12pm on the second, and I’m not too positive that will happen. We will not rush it anyway.

“There might be a chance (for him to play) on the second but the seventh (against Wolves) is for me the first real possible date. He had an intense World Cup, had two-and-a-half weeks off, had three or four sessions in that time, it makes sense that he now has a few sessions from not just a football point of view to fit in, but also a physical point of view.

“He is well rested and now we can start working with him and he should be fine for the seventh.”
