Mateu Lahoz spoke to Van Dijk in Spanish before Argentina v Holland shootout and asked to let Messi shoot first

Argentina edged out Netherlands in a fiery World Cup quarter final that went to penalties.

During the toss for the penalties, referee Mateu Lahoz, who was already being criticized for his management of the game, spoke to Virgil van Dijk in Spanish, rather than English or Dutch.

What's more, instead of asking him for his preference of shooting first or second, he seemed to try to nudge Van Dijk into letting Messi shoot first.

Lahouz says: "Should we let Messi go first?" He then insists again and again saying "First? First," pointing towards Messi.

Van Dijk declines repeatedly and then goes on to take the first penalty.

Even Messi, after the game, was critical of Lahoz stating: "I think that FIFA cannot use this referee for this type of match because he is not up to the task."
