The FIFA president is considering the historic idea after the success of the tournament in Qatar.

Qatar 2022 reportedly generated record revenue of £6.2 billion, £840 million more than Russia 2018 did.

Infantino’s thoughts on Qatar

As noted by SportsMole, the FIFA president was full of praise for Qatar 2022.

"Thanks to everyone involved in making this the best World Cup ever. Matches have been played without incidents. It has been a very joyful atmosphere," Infantino said.

He also touched on Morocco’s incredible run to the semi-final and a female referee (Stephanie Frappart) officiating a match for the first time.

What’s next?

With the tournament done and dusted, Infantino is reportedly looking to introduce a new tournament cycle in which the World Cup takes place every three years, Daily Mail reported.

The Club World Cup and continental competitions will be held in the years between the global tournaments.

If Infantino gets his way, the new cycle can only be implemented after the 2030 World Cup, as the international calendar is close to being concluded until then.

Does Infantino face opposition?

The FIFA president has reportedly received support from Africa and Asia’s governing bodies but could face opposition from Europe and South America.

UEFA and CONMEBOL previously rejected the idea of the World Cup being held every two years.
