Manchester United broke the world record transfer fee for a defender, when they paid £80m to Leicester City for the signing of English defender Harry Maguire in 2019.
The transfer can be said to have not gone to plan, as the imposing defender has struggled to justify the price tag, which has become an object of criticism for him by the media both at home and abroad.
However when the former Hull City defender turns up in the colours of the England national team, he is a different player.
It was his 2018 World Cup form that attracted Manchester United to him in the first place.
Former Chelsea midfielder Emmanuel Petit has now come in defence of Maguire, telling the English media that their criticism of the defender is going too far.
Petit defends Maguire against pundits
The English media is one of the most powerful in the world and as such, their defence or criticism of anyone is amplified, which explains why Maguire looks to be targeted.
Speaking to Mega Cas*no and quoted by Sportskeeda, Petit defended Maguire while calling on the English pundits to consider their words.
''The criticism of Harry Maguire went way too far. Some of the pundits in England need to take a look themselves for the way they treated Maguire. They talk too much,'' he said.
The former Arsenal midfielder also cast doubt over the future of Maguire at Manchester United, having fallen behind Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof in the list of centre-backs under Erik ten Hag.
"I’m not sure if Maguire will stay at Manchester United, because it is a different story for him there now with ten Hag as a manager. Maybe he will leave on loan?" he added.
