WATCH: James Ward-Prowse fires home beautiful free-kick for Southampton vs Chelsea

James Ward-Prowse proved once again on Saturday just why he is regarded as one of the finest free-kick takers in Premier League history.

The Southampton captain has earned himself a reputation as something of a specialist after scoring many stunning free-kicks throughout his career, with the current season looking like it will be his most prolific to date.

He bagged his fourth of the campaign in typical Ward-Prowse fashion this afternoon, as his side took on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

With the scores at 0-0 and the half-time whistle looming, the Englishman stepped up and delicately fired the ball over the wall and beyond the reach of keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

What a player. The goal takes Ward-Prowse to within just one of David Beckham's all-time Premier League record of 18 direct free-kick goals - and with his current form, you can bet it won't be long before he surpasses that stat.

But despite their captain's form this year, Southampton can't seem to build any momentum in their performances and find themselves bottom of the table.

A win against Chelsea would see the club sneak up to within one point of 19th placed Leeds United, but they'll need to turn things around quickly if they want to avoid the drop this season.

Although with a game against Leeds on February 25th looming on the horizon, this free-kick and potential victory vs Chelsea might be all the Saints need to shake their 2022/23 Premier League campaign into life.
