Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney handed £25 million boost as Wrexham close in on promotion

AFC Wrexham and their Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have reportedly been handed a £25 million backing to improve the club’s home ground, The Racecourse.

Ever since Reynolds and McElhenney took over the club back in February 2021, many people have been paying close attention to Wrexham’s every move.

Currently, the Red Dragons are on the brink of securing promotion back to the English Football League for the first time since 2008.

After winning against Yeovil Town on Tuesday night, Wrexham moved to 107 points at the top of the table.

If they win their match against Boreham Wood on Saturday, their place in League Two will be secured for next season.

Ahead of this historic moment, it has been reported that the club have been given a huge financial backing.

According to the Daily Star, Wrexham council have pledged £25 million towards a brand new 5,500 seater stand at the club’s home ground, The Racecourse.

If they are to go ahead with the construction, the ground’s capacity will increase to 15,000, which is nearly 4000 more than Premier League club Bournemouth.

It has been reported that Wrexham originally attempted to secure financial backing from the UK government by submitting an application through the Levelling Up scheme.

However, their application was rejected and now they are believed to have secured funding from the local council after the executive board unanimously backed their project of building a new stand.

Aside from improvements to the stadium, it has been reported that the local railway station and transport infrastructure will also be upgraded.

Speaking recently to the BBC, Reynolds spoke about his time in charge of the Welsh club.

He said: “It’s been brilliant. I love getting here early because I get to meet some of the locals as well, and some of the supporters who’ve been coming here for decades and decades.

“It’s really bore a special place in my heart and my entire family’s heart and I think across the pond as well. In Canada, where I’m from, people are obsessed with this club and this community, and so are people in United States, and it’s just been pretty remarkable.”
