Liverpool fans boo national anthem on the day of King Charles' coronation

Liverpool fans booed the national anthem as it was played prior to the Premier League clash with Brentford.

The Reds hosted the West London side at Anfield, days after it was confirmed the club would play God save the King ahed of kick-off.

The Premier League had contacted clubs “strongly suggesting” that the anthem be played to honour King Charles' coronation.

It was met by monumental opposition by Liverpool fans, though manager Jurgen Klopp has said, "The club's position is my position".

Liverpool fans were widely expected to greet the anthem with jeers and duly erupted in a chorus when the national anthem played over the Anfield speakers.

It was almost deafening, with supporters also chanting "Liverpool" to mix up the boos. After the club's anthem 'You'll Never Walk Alone' blared out over the tannoy, fans could be heard singing, "You can stick your coronation up your a***" and "F*** the tories".
