Barcelona put Marcos Alonso up for sale after just one season
Barcelona have surprised many by putting Marcos Alonso up for sale after just one season at the club.
The veteran Spanish left-back joined Barcelona on a free transfer from Chelsea last summer, but struggled to make an impact in his first season at the club. He made 21 appearances in all competitions, but only 10 of those were starts.
Alonso's lack of playing time was partly due to the form of Jordi Alba, who was one of Barcelona's best players last season. However, Alba has now left the club, and Alonso was expected to be the first-choice left-back this season.
However, Barcelona have now changed their plans and are looking to sell Alonso. The club are reportedly interested in signing Joao Cancelo from Manchester City, who can play as both a right-back and a left-back. This would allow Barcelona to have two versatile full-backs, with Alejandro Balde and Ivan Fresneda as the other options in the position.
Alonso's sale would raise funds for Barcelona to strengthen other areas of the squad. The club are also looking to sell Frenkie de Jong and Ousmane Dembele, and they are hoping to bring in Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha.
It remains to be seen whether Barcelona will be able to sell Alonso, but his departure would be a surprise to many. He is a talented player who still has a lot to offer, and he could have been a key player for Barcelona this season. However, the club's financial problems have forced them to make some tough decisions, and Alonso is one of the players who has been deemed surplus to requirements.
