Spain's Hermoso Justifies Rubiales' Kiss at Women's World Cup Triumph
Jenni Hermoso, the midfielder for Spain, has come forward to defend the actions of Luis Rubiales, the president of the Spanish football federation. Rubiales faced criticism on social media for sharing a kiss on the lips with Hermoso during the medal ceremony that followed the team's victory in the Women's World Cup final against England. Spain secured a 1-0 victory, claiming the championship trophy for the first time in their history.
During an Instagram live stream after the match, Hermoso expressed her feelings by stating, "I didn't mind it." Although she was laughing as she made the remark, she later clarified her perspective on the incident. Hermoso deemed the moment as a "genuine display of affection." In statements provided to AFP by the Spanish federation, Hermoso explained, "It was a completely spontaneous and mutual act driven by the overwhelming joy that winning a World Cup brings."
She continued, "The president and I share a strong rapport; his conduct towards all of us has been commendable. This gesture of affection and gratitude unfolded naturally." Hermoso emphasized that such a display of friendship and gratitude should not be excessively scrutinized, especially in light of their World Cup triumph. "Our focus should remain on the significant achievement of winning a World Cup; let's not stray from what truly matters."
Spain's journey to the World Cup victory was marred by controversies concerning both the federation and the relationship between the players and coach Jorge Vilda. Before the tournament, a group of prominent players, including some top stars, staged a protest involving 15 players against the national team. Eventually, many players altered their stance, with three even being included in the final squad.
Rubiales staunchly supported Vilda throughout, even as the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) faced criticism for its firm stance against the 15 protesting players.
Hermoso, who is associated with the Mexican team Pachuca, missed a penalty during the match. Nevertheless, Spain managed to secure the victory through Olga Carmona's goal in the first half. Overwhelmed by emotions, Hermoso tearfully conveyed her thoughts to Spanish broadcasters La 1 after the match, stating, "We executed our game plan to perfection and secured a World Cup triumph."
