Cristiano Ronaldo beat the Argentine by a year by registering an income of over $1bn in June 2019.
Messi, however, is the best-paid player in the world, having earned $126m last year; Leo got $92m in wages and $34 for sponsorship deals.
Meanwhile, Ronaldo earned $117m, Neymar — $96m, Kylian Mbappe — $42m and Mohamed Salah — $37m.
