Super Eagles’ Strikers Receive Charge For Goals Against Cape Verde

Super Eagles’ coach, Gernot Rohr has given his strikers a charge to rain goals against Cape Verde on Tuesday, as the Franco-German tactician pointed out that they cannot afford another slip up, megasportsarena.com reports.

While recounting how his team fell in a shock 1-0 loss at home against Central African Republic in their third match of the qualifiers for Qatar 2022 World Cup, Rohr acknowledged that losing at the same venue on Tuesday would be disastrous.

With the Eagles leading The Blue Sharks by just two points heading into the game at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Rohr noted that his team will have to score from open play and avoid relying on penalties as they did against Liberia on Sunday.

Indeed, the best impact that helped the Eagles in their 2-0 victory over The Lone Star were first half penalties by Victor Osimhen and Ahmed Musa, but Rohr confessed that he will love to see a better performance versus Cape Verde.

He went on to admit that the Eagles will have to be up and doing during Tuesday’s game in Lagos, as they could not score in normal play on Saturday and they needed two penalties to secure all three points.

Osimhen first struck in the 14th minute and won a late penalty when he was bundled over by Lone Stars goalkeeper Boison Wynney De Souza, which was converted by Musa, who got off the bench in the 87th minute.

Musa sent the keeper the wrong way to wrap up the three points for the three-time African champions in added time, but Rohr admitted that the Eagles have struggled to score goals in the ongoing qualifiers, averaging 1.2 from open play in five games.

After five rounds in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, only three Eagles’ players have scored from open play namely Kelechi Iheanacho, Victor Osimhen and Leon Aderemi Balogun, hence the import of Rohr’s desire for more goals from open play.

The former Gabon, Burkina Faso and Niger Republic coach, however, concluded by accepting that anywhere the goals come from they would always count, hence his verdict that Saturday’s victory was a job well done by his wards.

Rohr submitted thus: “We got these two penalties but we were not able to score a goal playing football only these two penalties.

“I think they were clear penalties but I would prefer to score normal goals and we could not. I hope we can do it in three days in the final game.

“We are happy about this victory, we knew before the match already that it is difficult to beat this team.

“When you see the penalties they were one-versus-one situations. If there is no mistake, no foul, perhaps we will score in normal play like you say.

“I’m happy that we didn’t concede any opportunities defensively and we scored two goals. When you score two goals, it’s not a disappointment, when you win 2-0 it’s not a disappointment.

“Finally, on penalties or no penalties it is a goal, that’s the most important and I hope we’ll do the same next Tuesday in the final game which will be very important for us.”
