Why Ralf Rangnick did not work with Erik ten Hag at Man United — explained

Erik ten Hag was one of the main reasons behind Ralf Rangnick's premature departure from Manchester United.

When Rangnick was appointed interim boss in the middle of 2021/22, the deal involved a two-year consultancy role once that ended. The German then chose to manage Austria and promptly ended his association with United.

The timing looked strange, given how many times Rangnick expressed an eagerness to work with the new coach.

Now, according to ESPN, the 63-year-old was unhappy about how he left the club. He was initially expected to hold a face-to-face meeting with Ten Hag and discuss plans for the team.

However, Ten Hag decided to speak with Rangnick over the phone instead. The Dutchman reportedly didn't think he'd work well with someone else offering advice and insights on decisions about the squad.

ESPN understands club chiefs too were infuriated with Rangnick for his overbearingly honest press conferences, where he stated United turned down his suggestion to sign a new striker in the winter window.

Ralf also didn't gel well with the players, who were frustrated at being publicly criticised.
