Former Manchester United and Scotland manager Tommy Docherty has died at the age of 92 following a long illness, according to his family. ‘The Doc’, as he was known, spent nine years playing for Preston and claimed 25 caps for Scotland, before moving into management. His most memorable spell came at United, where he lasted five years in charge and claimed the FA Cup after beating Bob Paisley’s Liverpool in the 1977 final. He also managed Chelsea, Aston Villa and Derby. Docherty died at his home in the north west on December 31. A family spokesperson said in a statement released to the Press Association: “Tommy passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at home. “He was a much-loved husband, father and papa and will be terribly missed. “We ask that our privacy be respected at this time.
