UK police apologise to Hillsborough families after 33 years

Police in the UK have issued an official apology for failures that resulted in the killing of 97 people in the Hillsborough disaster.

Martin Hewitt, the chair of the National Police Chiefs’ Council, made the apology "for the years of deflection and denial" as a report on lessons learnt from the disaster was launched.

Sky News add that this is the first time in 34 years police chiefs have apologised to the families of the victims.

On 15 April 1989, 94 Liverpool fans were crushed to death at Hillsborough when the Reds faced Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup. Three more people died as a result of injuries sustained during the crush.
